Improve Eyesight Naturally

We might not give our eyes the credit they deserve, because really, we’d have a hard time without them. As we age, our vision naturally worsens, which is why so many of us end up needing glasses. Some people will experience a deterioration in the vision sooner than others, and it’s only with regular trips to the opticians that the issue can be detected and monitored.

The most common solution for poor eyesight is glasses, which use prescription lenses to help people see clearly again. While glasses are an effective means of improving poor eyesight, they can be annoying to wear on a daily basis.

People who wear glasses may experience headaches and pain at the bridge of their nose from over-wearing. Glasses aren’t the most comfortable or practical solutions for bad eyesight – and while contact lenses might be the more preferable alternative, wouldn’t it just be better to be able to see naturally?

There’s obviously no cure for poor eyesight, and no remedy to help you obtain 20/20 vision again. However, there are a number of natural ways that you can improve your eyesight somewhat and protect your eyes from common degenerative vision diseases. Stay tuned to discover some of our favourite means of naturally improving eyesight:

1. Drink carrot juice

Did your mum ever tell you to eat your carrots because they’d help you to see in the dark? Unfortunately, there’s no evidence to suggest that any number of carrots can magically equip you with night vision, but carrots are pretty essential for good sight in general.

Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which is vital for clear vision. Eating carrots will provide you with the small amount of vitamin A needed to see well, but if you don’t care for them, that’s fine, because vitamin A can also be found in eggs, milk, and cheese.

Carrot juice might not sound too appealing to you, but as the natural remedy goes, you should try drinking it with one or two drops of olive oil, which will help you to absorb the nutrients more effectively.

If carrots in juice form really aren’t your thing, there’s no problem with adding chopped carrots to your savoury dishes whenever you fancy.

2. Get regular eye exams

Even if you ultimately want to avoid frequent visits to your optician for changes to your vision, it’s important that you still go for regular examinations to check your overall eye health. Eye exams are key for detecting conditions that you might not even know you’re suffering from, because a lot of them don’t have any obvious symptoms to look out for.

Whether you think your eyes are completely healthy or not, it’s generally recommended that you go for an eye exam at least once every two years. Staying free of any eye disease is the simplest way to keep your eyes healthy enough to not only maintain your vision but improve it too.

3. Eat a diet of antioxidant-rich foods

Our diets directly affect our overall health, so it makes sense that eating a high amount of foods that are good for your heart and blood vessels also helps protect your eyes. Foods that are rich in antioxidants, like leafy vegetables, strawberries, blueberries, and walnuts, have been found to help reduce the risk of cataracts, which causes clouding over the lens of the eye.

Foods containing zinc, like meat, shellfish, legumes, seeds and eggs, are also thought to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration, an eye condition that can lead to vision loss.

Because such a wide range of foods contain antioxidants and zinc, it’s fairly easy to add your favourites to your diet. Try snacking on walnuts for a healthier treat, adding blueberries to your morning porridge, or upping your daily intake of legumes like lentils and chickpeas.

4. Limit your screen time

Eye strain itself won’t worsen your vision, but it may lead to negative effects on your overall eye health, which could eventually result in a deterioration of your eyesight. The problem with eye strain is that in this modern world, it’s so easily caused. We spend hours of our time using technology that can cause damage to our eyes through the blue light emitted, resulting in dry eyes and headaches.

Cutting down on technology use should help you to maintain your vision and prevent it from worsening from the symptoms you experience. Get into the habit of switching off your phone, computer or TV screens at least two hours before bed, and especially don’t use your devices in the dark.

5. Manage diabetes

It’s a little-known fact that chronic health problems are often directly linked with your vision. If you have diabetes, for example, it’s possible for you to get something called diabetic retinopathy, where abnormal blood vessels might cause little areas of the retina to bleed and swell.

The retina is the part of the eye that captures light and sends it to the brain through the optic nerve, and when it’s damaged by diabetic retinopathy, you might experience serious vision problems and even blindness.

If you do have diabetes, managing your blood sugar levels is the best way to avoid diabetic retinopathy and keep your eyes healthy. While this won’t improve your vision, it’ll keep it healthy in the long run. Speak to your doctor if you need help in doing so.

6. Keep Your Weight in a Healthy Zone

It’s generally advised that you stay at a healthy weight to avoid health problems anyway, but did you know that being overweight or obese can increase inflammation and put you at a bigger risk of eyesight problems? High blood pressure, arterial disease, and diabetes can all cause degenerative vision issues, and knowing how to prevent these is key.

As well as staying at a healthy weight, you should also make sure to exercise regularly if you want to prevent your eyesight from worsening. It’s been proven in multiple studies that physical activity can prevent cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes from forming, both of which put you at risk of chronic eye disease.

7. Quit smoking

Smoking is pretty bad for you anyway, but you might not realise that it affects more than just your heart and your lungs. If you’re a smoker, you’ll be at a far higher risk of age-related macular degeneration, and studies have found that smoking may also be linked to the development of cataracts.

Because cigarettes contain free radicals, they can cause tissue and blood vessel damage to the eyes. Quitting smoking isn’t easy, but it’s one of the best things you can do for your eye health.

8. Use eye drops

If you suffer from dry eyes, eye drops might be the solution you need. Eye drops essentially create artificial tears, which moisten up the eye and prevent dryness. You might not realise how much your vision becomes impaired by dry eyes, and eye drops can help you to see better simply by lubricating the eye and stopping things from looking blurry. You can buy eye drops here

It’s not a good idea to become dependant on eye drops, but there’s no harm in using them every now and then when your eyes feel particularly dry and scratchy. Eye drops don’t actually improve your vision, but it should feel like they have, simply because they’re clearing up the blurriness that you might experience with dryness.

9. Wear sunglasses

There’s no denying the fact that UV light causes quite significant damage to the eyes. You can’t easily avoid UV, either, as it’s there even on cloudy days when the sun might not be out.

Wearing sunglasses in all weather conditions might get you a few funny looks, but they’ll help to improve your vision simply by keeping your eyes safe. When it’s thought that UV rays can increase the risk for cataract formation and cancer on the eyelids, you want to make sure you’re avoiding too much exposure where you can.

10. Drink green tea

Green tea has become all the range recently, which is a good thing because it really does pull out all the stops when it comes to naturally improving vision. Green tea is a fantastic source of antioxidants, which are known for their ability to fight off free radicals that cause cell damage. Antioxidants like vitamin C, lutein, and zeaxanthin are essential for protecting against a number of disorders, including eye disease.

One particular type of antioxidant called flavonoids can be found especially in green tea leaves. It’s thought that they can help protect the eyes from diseases like cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and various types of glaucoma.

Flavonoids may even be able to prevent the retina from being damaged by UV rays. If green tea isn’t your thing, you’ll find flavonoids in spinach, kale, and certain peppers too.

Now for some myths…

Of course, alongside the natural remedies for protecting and improving eyesight, there are a few supposed “cures” that actually do nothing to improve eyesight in the slightest. If you read about any of these on the internet, don’t be so quick to believe them:

1. Massaging around your eyes can promote better vision

Unfortunately, this isn’t true! Imagine if it really was that easy to improve your vision? If you suffer from a lot of tension from eyestrain, massaging around your eyes might make you feel better, but there’s no evidence to suggest it positively affects eyesight at all.

2. Wearing glasses for too long might worsen eyesight

This is a weird one – it’s almost like some people think that our eyes risk getting “too used” to wearing glasses and that we should give them a break from time to time if we don’t want our eyesight to get worse.

Obviously, this is another myth. If you need to wear glasses, giving your eyes a break from them will more than likely just lead to headaches from eyestrain.

3. Eye exercises can help you to see better

If you’ve ever ended up on the stranger side of the internet, you might have found hundreds of time-consuming eye exercises that can supposedly improve your vision if you commit to them. Maybe these exercises do help somewhat to improve the strength of the muscles around the eyes, but there’s no proof that they can do anything to enhance vision.

Conclusion

There are so many benefits to having healthier eyesight and improved vision. You’ll be safer, for a start – you never know what you might have to look out for while you’re driving or walking about! You also won’t have to deal with the side effects of a number of unpleasant molecular diseases.
