6 Steps To Successfully Highlight Your Hair
It’s important you wash your hair before starting the highlighting process. Also, remember what look you’re going for:
If you want streaks in your hair, you want to leave your hair damp but not dripping.
If you want highlights or lighter hair, pat dry the hair, making sure it’s not dripping.
1. Juice The Lemons Into A Bowl
You’ll need to cut the lemons in half, and either use your fingers to get the juice into the bowl or use a juicer.
Be sure the seeds are moved, as you don’t want them to clog up the spray bottle.
Use real lemons, not bottled lemon juice. Bottled lemon juice contains preservatives that can damage your hair.
2. Dilute The Juice
Once you have the juice in the bowl, you need to add water to it – in equal amounts. If you were able to get a cup of lemon juice, you need to add a cup of water.
3. Put Mixture Into Spray Bottle
Consider buying a new spray bottle, but if money is tight, you can always use an old spray bottle from home.
If you do this though, make sure it’s thoroughly cleaned before putting the lemon juice in. Do not ever use a spray bottle that has had chemicals in it.
Shake the container well to mix up the juice.
4. Apply Lemon Mixture To The Hair
Focus on the areas of your hair that you want to be lightened. You can do several strands or the entire hair – the choice is up to you.
If you want an accurate application, dab a cotton ball into the mixture and rub that on the hair strands you want to lighten.
You can also spray down the parting and comb the hair so that the lemon juice is applied where you want. If your hair is pulled into a ponytail, you can apply the mixture along the forehead and brush back.
Special Note: The more lemon juice applied to the hair, the lighter the hair is going to get.
5. Stay In The Sun
For the lemon juice to work, you need to stay in the sun for at least 30 minutes. When the hair begins to dry, it starts to lighten.
While in the direct sunlight, you want to protect your body and face using sunscreen.
The more time you spend in the sun, the lighter the hair will become. Don’t spend a lot of time in the sun, as lemon juice can lead to bleaching, which causes hair damage.
6. Washing Your Hair
It’s important to wash out the lemon juice entirely from your hair. Use moisturizing products to shampoo and condition your hair. When the hair is dry, you should see the lighter sections.
If you want strong highlights, make sure to repeat the application once a week. Do not apply more than this, as it can damage the hair, causing it to become weak and delicate.
Important Word of Caution
The lemon juice/sunshine method works better on fair hair. If you have black or brown hair, it could turn it red instead of blond
